To Whom Much is Given

THE WORD BECAM FLESH

Thursday of the Third week in Ordinary time, 2022

2Sam 7:18-19, 24-29

Ps 132

Mark 4:21-25

To Whom Much is Given

Dear friends in Christ, what is more important to you? The house you can build with bricks and mortar or the house God can build which is a great family? Faith in God leads one to choose the second and work for it.

In the Gospel of today, (Mark 4:21-25) Jesus declares, “…The measure you give will be the measure you get, and still more will be given you. For to him who has, will more be given; and from him who has not, even what he has will be taken away.” Fulfilment in life can only come, when someone is totally committed and dedicated to his mission. In matters of faith, half-measure does not do anyone, any good. A lack of faith however is even worse, because whatever little is there, is also taken away. If you sow a hundred mounds of yam, you will not expect to reap two hundred at the harvesting season.

The first reading (2 Samuel 7:18-19.24-29) presents David again who was overjoyed and overawed by God’s goodness. He had given the best of himself, by obeying God where Saul failed. In the verses preceding this passage, he wanted to build a house for God, a proposal which the Lord did not approve; but while God will not accept that he should build a Temple, to house the Ark of the Covenant, he declared to David, “Moreover the Lord declares to you that the Lord will make you a house. When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you…” God vowed to keep the house of David on the throne forever. David’s response to this is, “Who am I, O Lord God, and what is my house, that you have brought me thus far? And yet this was a small thing in your eyes, O Lord God…and the house of your servant David will be established before you.” David saw these blessings as the mark of God’s faithfulness and mercy upon him and his household and he is humbled by how much blessings God has put in place for him and his descendants. What have you that has not been given you by the Lord, bow yourself in humility before him. If you serve the Lord with all your heart and you obey his commands, you may build him a house of bricks but he builds you a true house that transcends your very existence to that of your household and your descendants.

Let us Pray: God our eternal Father, give us a heart that is ever grateful for the graces you bestow on us out of your infinite mercy and keep us strong in faith. Amen.

+Remain blessed
