To the other towns

THE WORD BECAME FLESH

Wednesday of 22nd Week in Ordinary Time, 2021

Col 1:1-8

Ps 52

Luke 4:38-44

To the other towns

When Jesus went to his hometown in Nazareth, he was driven out by angry townspeople.

In today’s gospel reading in contrast, the people of Capernaum were trying to prevent Jesus from leaving them. Jesus had healed Simon Peter’s mother-in-law of a fever and many others who were brought to him for healing. When he then went off to a lonely place to be alone with his heavenly Father, the people of Capernaum went to look for him and, having found him, tried to prevent him leaving them.

However, Jesus knew that there were other towns where he needed to proclaim the presence of the kingdom of God in word and deed. The people of Capernaum couldn’t hold on to Jesus for themselves. He didn’t belong to them; he belonged to all of Israel and, indeed, all of humanity. None of us can keep Jesus for ourselves. We have to let him go to others.

Our relationship with the Lord is for sharing. We let the Lord go to others by witnessing to him with our lives. The Lord wants to keep breaking new ground through each one of us.

In the first reading, Paul tells the church in Colossae, ‘the good news which has reached you is spreading all over the world’. If the Lord has reached us, each of us, it is so that he can touch the lives of others through us.

Let us pray: Lord Jesus Christ, you have all power to heal and to deliver. There is no trouble nor bondage you cannot overcome. Set me free to serve you joyfully and to love and serve others generously. Amen

+Remain blessed
