I Say to You, Arise

Dear friends in Christ, I welcome you to the month of February and pray for God’s protection and blessings. There are times when situations are considered beyond redemption and people simply give up and resign themselves to defeat. Jesus has taught us however, never to give up because where there is hope, based on faith in God that hope does not deceive.

In today’s first reading we can sense the sorrow of king David at the death of his Son Absalom, who had wanted to seize power before the death of his father. This power struggle had forced David to flee his palace. “Absalom was riding upon his mule, and the mule went under the thick branches of a great oak, and he was left hanging between heaven and earth, while the mule under him went on.” So ends the life of a power grabber.  In spite of his trouble, David was very much concerned about the well-being of his son who had forced him to run. When the news came to him of the death of Absalom, he wept and said, “O my son Absalom, my son…would that I had died instead of you…” Absalom’s life came to an abrupt end because of his quest for power and many follow same path even today. Power belongs to God and those to whom he has given authority to manage the affairs of the people must constantly seek his face to do what is right or they may also end up losing the favour of God.

In the Gospel (Mark 5:21-43) Jairus came to Jesus in search of help for his little daughter, he fell at his feet and said, “My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be well, and alive.” Here we see the love of a father for his child. Jesus was not going about advertising miracles, but he did not fail to attend to those who in faith came to him. This official humbled himself in the face of the opposition that some Jews were putting in the way of Jesus. Faith also moved a woman who had suffered from the flow of blood for twelve years, to come to Jesus, saying to herself, “If I touch even his garments, I shall be made well.” Her condition separated her from others, since it could render them unclean. Yet Jesus restored her to good health. Jairus’ daughter died before Jesus arrived, but was restored to life too. He is the Lord of life. Faith in him makes all things possible, if it be according to the will of God. Whatever the challenge may be, look up in faith to Jesus, exercise no doubt about what you desire. Dare to ask him because he is our true hope and then wait patiently upon him.

Let us pray: Lord, your favours have ushered me into a new month. Sustain me in your name so to serve you in this month with the gifts and blessings received, quench the spirit zeal of Absalom in me that I may not take issues and situations in my own hands.

+Remain blessed
