Stewardship of Our Dependence on God
Our first reading this Sunday tells us: “The Lord God took Abram outside and said, ‘Look up at the sky and count the stars, if you can. Just so,’ he added, ‘shall your descendants be.’ Abram put his faith in the LORD, who credited it to him as an act of righteousness.” Genesis 15:5-6
Abram was an old man, and his wife was barren when God made this promise, yet Abram had faith.
We human beings like to be in control at all times. We don’t like feeling dependent upon anyone, not even God. Yet, without God’s providence, we would not even exist, let alone be able to take our next breath. This is a reality that we often prefer to avoid pondering. However, it is only through consciously embracing our need for God that we find authentic human fulfillment in being God’s stewards.
What situations in my life are the hardest for me to accept?
In what area of my life do I struggle most to trust God?
Lord, help me to embrace my dependence upon you, and teach me to trust in your providence, one day at a time. Amen.
