God’s offspring…

Dear friends in Christ, often times, we lack adequate words to express spiritual realities—that is why, it is difficult to dispute the other person’s spiritual experience, which can sometimes be so dramatic that you may think the person is out of his mind. No wonder St Thomas Aquinas after a mystical experience said, “All that I have written seems like straw compared to what has now been revealed to me.” He wrote no more after that. To this day, no one knows for sure what he experienced.

Our first reading today, (Acts 17:15.22-18:1) tells us of the experience of Paul in Athens. He had gone round on a tour of the city and found many and different shrines named to different gods. However he said, “I found also an altar with this inscription, ‘To an Unknown god.’” Paul says, what these people worship as unknown, he has brought to them. “For we are indeed his offspring. Being then God’s offspring, we ought not to think that the Deity is like gold, or silver, or stone, a representation by the art and imagination of man. The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all men everywhere to repent…” This however did not convince the people enough as they laughed at Paul, telling him that they will hear him some other time. But Paul also took a lesson away from this meeting with the Areopagus, it is the fact that, a show of oratory is not enough to convince the people about God. He will henceforth talk more about the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus, in his proclamation of the Gospel.

As human beings, we are sometimes tempted like Paul to show forth our knowledge of the mysteries, and all we have committed ourselves to study. However, the success of the gospel message, does not depend on the big grammar spoken by the Apostles. People marveled at the fact that, mere fishermen from Galilee were the ones chosen by Jesus to be his Apostles. Do not be afraid to talk about Jesus, you do not need to be a great scholar to preach the Gospel, just talk about Jesus and the sacrifice of the Cross which he endured for our sake. That truth is what brings people into the fold.

The Gospel passage (Jn 16:12-15) is a reminder to the Apostles of the fact that they should expect the Spirit of Truth who will guide them to the Truth and remind them of all they had been taught by Christ who is himself the Way, the Truth and the Life. Do you posses this Spirit of truth or the spirit of the evil one described as the father of lies?

Let us pray: God our eternal king, we praise you for your goodness. Bless the efforts we make at proclaiming your word. Amen

+Remain blessed
